As a kid I guess I was a bit of a “band geek”.   In “band” or “Orchestra” there are always multiples in each instrument section -- 8 Violins, 10 flutes, 6 Tubas etc.  For the non-musicians, this is not simply to get more volume, rather, a broader mix of notes from an instrument that improves the music you receive in your ears.

Each instrument section (like the clarinet section) is organized by “Chairs.”  First chair clarinet leads the section with the most dominate notes you hear, while the other chairs harmonize to broaden the musical quality of the piece.

In every company, there are first chair players.  What is often missed is the importance of finding good supporting members.

Just for fun, organize your company by sections.  Some sections might be titled Product Development, Customer Service or, Sales.  Each section needs some Non-management leadership – name them as your first chair.  Now identify who is in the subsequent chairs by ability.

Start to compare the relative contribution of each chair.  You might find you have the best 3rd chair player trying to be a 1st chair contributor.  Or, you might find you have too many 1st chair players in a single role.

Whatever the case this exercise will help you identify gaps or overlaps in your talent pool and how they relate to each other.

I’ll close by saying if your team is built like an orchestra everyone will think you’re a great Conductor.
